How Does Microblading Work?

Eyebrow pencils, stencils, gels, pigments, and powders just don’t cut it for you anymore. The lady at the makeup counter has helped you with every product available and still, you’re left unsatisfied with the shape, fullness, and longevity of the products you use on your brows. You need a more permanent solution that is longer-lasting and more natural-looking. Microblading may be the answer, and it is offered right here at Xanadu Med Spa in Fort Collins.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a cosmetic procedure that creates individual hairs in the brow shape of your choice. This is achieved with a cosmetic tattooing machine that uses tiny needles to inject the pigment color you choose into your brow line. The technician uses their handheld tool to draw hair-like strokes that mimic natural brow hair. This procedure is similar to a traditional tattoo, however the pigment is implanted much closer to the skin’s surface than a regular tattoo.

Who Performs the Procedure at Xanadu Med Spa in Fort Collins?

This treatment is performed by a certified technician in a sterile environment. Our rigorous health and safety standards are what make us a top-rated med spa. Here at Xanadu we are thrilled to be working with the talented Mary Ritcherson, a Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional (C.P.C.P.). She has over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry and completed over 15,000 procedures on eyebrows alone and has gained worldwide recognition for her distinctive techniques.

Who Benefits From This Technique?

Anyone who has ever wished for tamer, fuller, or darker brows will find their confidence soar. Whether you have thin or sparse brows that need total revamping or you have naturally full ones and want to enhance or shape what’s already there, our technician can help you create the look you’ve longed for. Because of the intricate hair-like precision, this procedure can prove especially beneficial to clients who have alopecia or have received therapies which may have caused hair loss.

Every skin type is eligible to receive this treatment. Skin types differ significantly from one person to the next so different courses of action may be needed. For instance, the pigment adheres to drier skin better than oily skin, meaning that people with oily skin may need additional touch-ups to attain optimum results. In general, if you have ever so much as used an eyebrow pencil, you can benefit from this procedure.

How Do I Achieve the Look I Want?

With this form of eyebrow definition, our in-house certified technician will walk you through every option to achieve the look you’ve dreamed of. At the beginning of your appointment you will discuss and decide on the color, shape, and fullness of the brow you desire using your natural brow line as a guide. Many women arrive at the appointment not knowing what their true brow should look like due to a lifetime of plucking and coloring. You are not alone.

Your technician will measure and determine the size and width that will best complement your face shape, and will make sure you are completely happy with the design before continuing to the next step. This process can often take longer than the procedure itself. And rightfully so; we want to make sure the look you want is the look you get. The results give the illusion of impeccably groomed brows that everyone will think are just naturally perfect.

What Does It Feel Like?

Most clients describe the experience as feeling like small scratches. If you believe you are sensitive to pain, use a numbing cream before attending your appointment. And although this treatment is similar to the process of a tattoo, the sensation is not nearly as uncomfortable.

The time this process takes will be dependent on the client’s needs so the exposure to discomfort will vary. To shape or fill in already full eyebrows will be quicker than client’s who need a full brow created. This procedure is done in one appointment regardless of the time it will take to complete. So while you will feel the sensation of the needles, it will not be painful or upsetting.

Is There Any Preparation I Need to Do?

While the technician will prep the brow area with numbing cream about 30 minutes before the procedure, there are some things you can do to optimize your experience and ensure desired results. In the days preceding your appointment, minimize products such as retinol, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, and fish oil supplements, as these are blood thinners.

It is also important to avoid anything that can alter the look of your skin beforehand such as tanning, Botox, and waxing or tweezing. Steer clear of caffeine and alcohol as they can increase the skin’s sensitivity. Chemical peels, laser procedures, or dermabrasion should be avoided at least two weeks before treatment. And, as a quick tip, shower and style your hair as needed since you will want to keep your brows dry for several days following the procedure.

What Happens After the Appointment?

While the procedure itself requires no downtime, you will experience some redness and possible discomfort at the injection sites. Itching, scabbing, and swelling are also normal and are to be expected. For the first couple of weeks, take care to avoid rubbing your brow area, exfoliating the surrounding skin, and minimize sun exposure. Do not use eyebrow pencils, face foundation, or any cosmetic beauty product in the brow area to protect the integrity of the pigment and reduce irritation.

The average client needs up to two weeks to heal and up to a month for the color to fully set in. Do not pick at any scabs as to not release any of the pigment; allow the scabs to detach on their own. Swimming and activities that cause excessive sweating are to be avoided. The extra care needed for this area during healing will be worth the effort by ensuring the longevity of your new brows.

How Long Does It Last?

At first, your brows will appear darker simply because there is the most pigment. As time goes on, they will become softer and more natural-looking. Depending on your particular skin and lifestyle, you may benefit from touch-ups a couple of times a year. Because this procedure is semi-permanent, you can expect your results to last up to three years. While the hair-like lines will not disappear completely, they can soften and blur creating more of a shading look.

Since this is a pigment injected above the dermis layer of skin, the color can change over time and begin to fade. This is different from traditional tattoos which inject the ink below the dermis causing the ink to be permanent. Touch-ups or regular top-ups are completely safe and can extend the life of your new look.
