Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Fort Collins Hormone Replacement Therapy Q&A

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) offers a convenient and highly effective solution for hormone replacement. This therapy involves painlessly inserting low-dose bio-identical hormone pellets under the skin, releasing precise amounts of testosterone and estradiol as needed. At Xanadu Med Spa, we’re proficient in both SottoPelle and BioTE methods, tailoring BHRT to individual needs.

BHRT comes with a host of benefits, from improved energy levels and mood consistency to relief from anxiety, depression, and hot flashes. It can enhance cognition, bone density, and even serve as a new treatment strategy for various conditions. BHRT is also a safe option for transgender patients, and the frequency of pellet insertions varies from person to person but averages every three to four months.

What Is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

It is the most convenient and effective method of hormone replacement available. Thoroughly documented and researched in medical journals, the therapy involves the simple and painless insertion of bio-identical hormone pellets under the skin. The hormone pellet implants are low-dose, customized to suit the physiological needs of each individual patient and are approximately the size of a Tic Tac. When blood flows over them they begin to release the correct amount of testosterone and estradiol into the bloodstream. More testosterone and/or estradiol is released into the blood stream whenever the body needs it, for example, during exercise or periods of stress. This delivery method allows your body to recognize the hormones and flourish with them by providing the ability to control the release of the hormone just as it did when the ovaries and testicles were working normally.

At Xanadu Med Spa, our staff have been trained in both the SottoPelle and the BioTE therapy methods. We carefully choose our hormone pellets, the training, and the tools to customize the therapy to each patient’s hormone needs.

HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO COME BACK TO THE OFFICE TO RECEIVE PELLETS?

It depends on the person, but on average from three to four months.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER TYPES OF BIO-IDENTICAL THERAPIES?

Unlike other methods out there, these pellets are placed under the skin. Other forms, including creams, patches, injections, and even miniscule capsules go through the liver and can cause a roller coaster effect. The pellets go through the bloodstream, don’t go through the liver and can deliver a constant stream of hormones into your bloodstream twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Not all hormone replacement therapy pellets are created the same either. Some hormone therapy pellets use fillers or more pure ingredients and compounding methods. Our staff’s experience and training in diagnosis and pellet insertion procedures can also make a significant difference in the efficacy of your treatment. Years of research went into developing both the SottoPelle and BioTE methods. In the end, they were uniquely formulated to work with your body’s chemistry to support individual hormonal balance and optimum health. We use the right kind of natural hormone (biologically identical), using the proper delivery system (quality pellets placed under the skin), in the proper amounts (through accurate testing, analysis and individualized to your hormonal needs) that will work for three to six months, and for some, even longer!

WHY DOESN’T MY DOCTOR SUGGEST NATURAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY AS AN OPTION?

The great majority of physician training is on synthetic hormones. More than likely they were never trained on the use of biologically identical hormone therapies.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR THE HORMONES TO GET INTO MY SYSTEM AND WORK?

Most females report that they begin to experience improvement within several days of receiving their pellets. Testosterone pellets for men may take two weeks to express their benefits.

AS A WOMAN, DO I STILL NEED ESTROGEN IN MY HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY?

Estrogen is the most important hormone for a woman to protect her against heart attack, stroke, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. Synthetic estrogen taken orally does not offer the universal benefits or the same benefits as being on bio identical estrogen.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OR COMPLICATIONS?

Side effects in both men and women are rare. In women, transient breast tenderness lasting 7-10 days may occur with the first insertion, but rarely with repeat treatments. Acne and hair loss are rare occurrences from testosterone replacement therapy. The growth of facial hair is also rare and occurs no more frequently than what happens in postmenopausal women on no hormones. In men, the side effects are also rare, but may include decreased sperm count, decreased testicular mass and possible prostate enlargement. It should be noted that these side effects occur much more frequently with the use of synthetic hormone replacement therapies.

WHAT IF MY PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN OR MY GYNECOLOGIST SAYS THAT THERE IS ‘NO DATA’ TO SUPPORT THE USE OF PELLET IMPLANTS? AND IS IT SAFE?

It’s up to you to do your research and make an informed decision. Pellet therapy has been in use since 1935 Europe and the 1950’s in the United States, and there is plenty of evidence to support the long-term safety and benefits of hormone therapy using pellet implants. Bio-identical hormone pellet therapy is currently being administered safely to women and men in five continents, and has been studied for over 80 years, not only to determine safety and efficacy, but to study its role in the prevention of diseases, such as breast cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s dementia, Type 2 diabetes and many others.
