How Do Laser Hair Removal Treatments Work?

Hair removal lasers emit strong light to the skin, which targets the root of the hair follicles. Pigment in the skin absorbs the light, which allows the laser to penetrate the skin effectively and safely. Once the light reaches the root, the hair follicle is destroyed.

By destroying the root at the source, it becomes much more difficult for the hair to regrow quickly.

Where Can Laser Treatments Be Done?

Laser hair removal treatments can be carried out virtually all over the body. Areas of the body that we usually target include:

  • Neck.
  • Facial areas, including eyebrows and upper lip.
  • Legs.
  • Bikini line.
  • Arms.
  • Back.
  • Shoulders.

During your consultation, you can speak to a member of our team and determine which areas you would most like to target during your sessions at our clinic.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before treatment, some patients who have never undergone laser hair removal procedures express concern over what to expect during the procedure. Before your first session, one of our licensed estheticians will explain in detail how this procedure works and what to expect to ease any concerns and clarify any doubts you may have.

During treatment, a member of our team will scan the body area with a laser hair removal handpiece that emits the hair-destroying light.

Some patients may feel a slight discomfort while the laser works its magic. However, this procedure is performed relatively quickly, and any pain is mild and temporary.

How to Prepare

Before your first appointment, we’ll schedule a consultation so that you can tell a member of our staff exactly which areas of the body you want the hair removed and what results you want to achieve.

During your consultation, one of our estheticians will ask a series of questions about your medical history, including any skin issues you may suffer from, in order to determine the best course of treatment that’s specific to your needs.

We ask our patients to shave the area that will be treated prior to treatment. We advise against waxing or shaving the area and avoid plucking unwanted hair, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the hair removal treatment.

To minimize the likelihood of pain or discomfort during treatment, clients should avoid direct sunlight a week or so before treatment and avoid using any skin-lightening creams or products.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions a patient needs depends greatly on a variety of factors. Factors that determine the number of sessions necessary to remove hair include hair color, hair type, and skin type, as well as the size and location of the treatment area on the body.

For example, hair on the legs and arms is usually darker and thicker than the hair on the rest of the body and so usually responds well to treatments. On the other hand, facial hair is usually thinner and lighter. This can make removing hair in this area slightly more difficult and may require patients to wait longer in between maintenance treatments.

It is difficult to determine how many sessions each individual requires to eliminate excess hair and significantly prevent hair growth. That’s why a consultation before the client’s first appointment is so important.

On average, patients require 4 to 6 sessions to see results.

How Long Do Results Last?

The results of laser hair removal are rarely permanent.

However, results usually last between 6 months and 2 years, so this treatment is a cost-effective and long-lasting alternative to other procedures, including shaving and waxing.

Will Laser Hair Removal Work with My Skin Type?

Laser hair removal treatments are most effective for people with lighter skin tones and darker hair.

Patients with darker skin types tend to find that hair removal laser treatments are less effective at removing unwanted hair.

At Xanadu Med Spa, we offer a range of laser treatments, including the Cutera excel HR Laser and the IPL hair removal laser, to ensure we have a laser treatment that fits every client’s needs.

Will It Hurt?

Some patients experience swelling and redness one or two days after treatment. This discomfort is usually temporary and mild at best.

In fact, some clients say that undergoing waxing is often more painful than laser hair removal treatments.
