What Are Spider Veins?

Varicose veins, more commonly known as spider veins, are enlarged veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They are usually dark blue and purple in color and sometimes can appear to be twisted and bulging.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are usually caused by aging, trauma, sun exposure, hormonal changes, and skin conditions such as rosacea.

These types of veins are most commonly visible on the legs and can cause some pain and discomfort. In general, however, spider veins are usually a cosmetic concern and do not pose any health risks.

Some people use compression stockings to relieve the symptoms of spider veins by stimulating blood flow. However, these do little to reduce their overall appearance.

Cutera Excel HR System

One of our most popular laser systems amongst our patients suffering from varicose veins is the Cutera Excel HR.

The Cutera Excel HR utilizes endogenous laser therapy to improve the appearance of spider veins. The laser light transmitted from the laser is absorbed by the skin where the spider veins are situated and are then converted into heat. The veins absorb the heat and are ultimately destroyed.

What’s more, the Cutera Excel HR laser treatment stimulates collagen production in the skin by heating the upper layers of the skin. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the body that carries a number of uses, including helping to strengthen, tone, and tighten the skin.

CynoSure Elite MPX Laser

Another popular laser used at our clinic is the CynoSure Elite MPX laser.

Similarly to the Cutera Excel HR, the CynoSure Elite MPX targets blood vessels that cause the appearance of varicose veins. These blood vessels react to the heat energy from the laser, constrict, and then evaporate.

The Multiplex technology present in the CynoSure Elite MPX laser is particularly impressive. The laser comes with two different wavelengths, which makes for a more comfortable experience.

Due to the versatility of the CynoSure laser, your esthetician may be able to tackle an array of skin issues as well as varicose veins at the same time. Age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles can all be targeted when using the Multiplex technology.

Benefits of Using Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins

Non-Invasive

Nowadays, there are many varicose veins treatment options to choose from, including sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the varicose vein to fade its appearance and is a common varicose vein treatment option.

However, many people are reluctant to use injections and opt for a non-invasive treatment option, such as laser therapy, instead.

Multipurpose

Some lasers, including those fitted with the Multiplex technology, can tackle a range of skin issues at the same time, including large leg veins. Some skin issues that can be treated with these lasers include:

  • Pigmentation.
  • Redness.
  • Wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Spider Veins.

Little Discomfort

Unlike many other cosmetic procedures, laser treatments involve little pain and discomfort. Also, the laser light used in varicose vein laser treatments is suitable for all skin types.

Numbing gel is often applied to the skin before the laser treatment begins to minimize any pain the patient may feel, and most patients describe the sensation as a tingling feeling rather than a particularly uncomfortable sensation.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions each person requires differs depending on the size and severity of the specific person’s unwanted veins.

Most clients require 3-4 treatments every 4-6 weeks to see optimal results.

How Long Does Each Session Take?

The length of each session depends greatly on the size of the spider veins. In general, larger varicose veins take longer to treat than small varicose veins.

On average, each spider veins treatment appointment lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Post-Treatment Plan

After undergoing laser spider veins treatment, we highly recommend following our post-treatment plan:

  • Follow a healthy diet plan.
  • Keep active by doing regular exercise.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure.
  • Use sunscreen with a high level of SPF.
  • Wear compression stockings.

By following the post-treatment plan, the results of the procedure will last longer.

Results

Many clients tend to notice visible results after the first or second appointment.

In general, patients should expect to see optimal results after several weeks from their final appointment.

Are There Any Side Effects?

After each procedure, some patients experience some redness and swelling. However, this is usually mild and subsides after a day or so.

Other, less common side effects include bruising and a change in the skin’s pigmentation. These are rare side effects and seldom occur after laser therapy for spider vein removal.
