What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common condition that makes some portions of the skin appear darker than others. These marks can appear as brown, black, gray, red, or pink.

Some common examples of hyperpigmentation include:

  • Melasma – A skin condition that forms brown or grayish brown patches all over the face. Genetics, hormonal imbalances, and sun exposure without proper UV protection most commonly cause these patches of hyperpigmentaiton
  • Age spots – These are small, flat areas of pigmentation on the skin that vary in size. They appear most commonly in areas that are exposed to sunlight without proper protection, like the face, hands, shoulders, and arms.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation – A condition characterized by an overproduction of melanin in the skin after inflammation. These marks commonly form after popping an acne breakout.

What is Intense Pulsed Light?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a light therapy treatment that releases many wavelengths of light to address areas of hyperpigmentation.

IPL targets pigmentation by penetrating down the deeper layers of the skin. The cells of pigmentation absorb the light energy, which converts into heat. This heat destroys the pigmentation to create a clearer complexion.

For your IPL session at Xanadu, your laser technician will first apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment areas. This will numb the treatment area to minimize discomfort throughout your treatment.

Your technician will then run the IPL device over your treatment area, effectively destroying hyperpigmentation for a brighter, more even skin tone.

We typically recommend our patients undergo 1 to 3 IPL sessions to achieve optimal results. This treatment involves minimal recovery and will take approximately 3 to 5 days for you to see results.
