Does Diet Affect Acne?

Acne can have a number of causes, such as clogged pores, too much oil, inflammation, hormonal changes, genetic factors, smoking, pollution, stress, and bacteria in the skin. Some medications, such as lithium and steroids, can also cause acne, as well as makeup, hair products, and other skin products that can clog pores.

Another factor that can contribute to acne is diet. Certain foods can promote inflammation and trigger acne outbreaks. Certain foods can also affect hormones. For example, milk consumption, high-sugar foods, and high-glycemic foods such as white bread and cereals can raise blood sugar levels and affect hormones that affect the skin.

However, despite the possible connection between diet and acne, there is no guarantee that changing your diet will cure acne. Often a combination of lifestyle changes and professional treatments is the most effective way to deal with acne.

What is Acne?

Acne vulgaris is a skin condition that occurs when your dead skin cells mix with sebum (the oil that your body produces), clogging your hair follicles. This blockage results in a spot or blackhead.

Acne can occur for a broad range of reasons, and diet is thought to play a role. Although changing diet is rarely sufficient to completely get rid of acne.

Does Diet Affect Acne?

Otto Schaefer, MD, spent 30 years with the Intuit Eskimo people in Arctic Canada. He reported that acne was absent when they were eating traditional whole foods such as seals, fish, birds, rabbits, and berries. However, when they changed to a typical Western diet with chips, carbonated drinks, and other processed foods, the prevalence of acne became similar to those seen in the west.

Western societies often have a high glycemic diet, which is believed to worsen acne. High glycemic foods are carbohydrate foods that are made of simple sugars that are broken down quickly by your body, such as white bread, pasta, sugar, and chips. These foods cause a rapid increase in blood glucose which causes the body to release insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Having excess IGF-1 can cause your oil glands to produce more sebum, which could increase your risk of acne

Other researchers have also liked dairy, trans fats, and saturated fats to acne as these foods could stimulate the production of hormones that cause excess oil to be secreted by the glands. However, more research needs to be done to be clear on the role that diet has on acne.

What Foods Could be Beneficial For Your Skin?

While a high glycemic load diet is thought to contribute to acne, a low glycemic diet could help to reduce your risk of developing acne. Low glycemic foods are made of complex carbohydrates and include legumes, whole grains, and unprocessed fruits and vegetables.

Certain vitamins and minerals are also thought to benefit the skin such as zinc, Omega 3 fatty acids, and vitamins A and E. Antioxidants, which prevent harmful free radicals in your body, are also thought to benefit the skin. A diet rich in these compounds could help improve skin health and reduce acne. These foods include:

  • Blueberries
  • Carrots
  • Sweat potation
  • Brown rice
  • Quinoa
  • Lentils
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Nuts
  • Fatty fish such as salmon
  • Beans

Everybody is different, and while some people find that their acne improves a lot when they change their diet, for others, it could make little difference. Food allergies or sensitivities can also play a role, and so the foods listed above may not be suitable for everyone.

How Can I Get Rid of Acne? – Our Top Recommendation – AviClear

At Xanadu Spa, we offer a range of leading acne treatments, and in your free consultation, we will discuss your options with you and formulate a plan that meets your needs. We also offer nutritional therapy, which you may want to take advantage of.

For a large percentage of the clients that come to us, the most effective treatment is likely to be AviClear. This is a breakthrough treatment that we believe will provide the most effective results for most acne sufferers, including teens and adults.

How Does AviClear Work?

AviClear is a state-of-the-art laser treatment that is suitable for the majority of our clients; unlike some other popular acne treatments, it is just as effective on darker skin tones. What sets it apart is that it has a high chance of success on most skin types, including those suffering from mild to severe acne.

AviClear is a laser system that targets the sebum glands in the skin. When sebum is overproduced, it leads to clogged pores and spots or blackheads. The AviClear laser directly targets these glands to reduce the amount of sebum they produce.

Each AviClear treatment lasts around 30 minutes, and most people need three sessions over the course of one month for the best results. The results are immediate, and most people experience a dramatic reduction in breakouts and their severity if they do occur.

Previous acne treatments such as Accutane, peels, pills, and topics have not progressed much in the last three decades. AviClear is an innovative treatment that has built upon the expertise of leaders in the field.

Is AviClear Permanent?

Current research has shown that AviClear lasts two years. However, the results are expected to last longer, AviClear is a new treatment, and longer studies need to be carried out to say for certain how long the results will last.

Following treatment, it is recommended that you maintain a healthy skincare routine to ensure that your results last.

For long-term sufferers who have tried various treatments with limited success and short-lived results, AviClear could be the answer to your skin woes.

Do AviClear Treatments Hurt?

AviClear treatments last for around 30 minutes. Most patients report a strange sensation, which could be compared to a rubber band snapping on the skin. Most people do not find this sensation painful, only strange.

The AviClear treatment utilizes a temperature control system that monitors the temperature of the skin. The device then applies cooling or heading to help make the procedure more comfortable for the patient.

Are There Any Side Effects to AviClear?

AviClear treatments are noninvasive and require very little downtime or recovery. That means that there are very few side effects, and most people return to their normal lives afterward with no interruption. Some of our patients even visit our clinic during their lunch break and then return to work.

One possible side effect is a breakout of acne in the days following the first treatment. However, once it calms down patients find their breakouts reduced in the future. Usually, this does not occur in any additional treatments.

Accutane Vs. AviClear

Accutane is a strong prescription drug that is sometimes prescribed to long-term acne sufferers whose skin has not responded well to other treatments. Although Accutane can be effective, it also carries a high risk of side effects.

Side effects include dry eyes, dry skin, vision issues, back and joint pain, and chapped lips. More severe side effects include miscarriage and birth defects, inflammatory bowel disease, crohn’s disease, and depression.

Fortunately, most people experience similar or better results with AviClear, without any of the side effects.

Who is a Candidate For AviClear?

AviClear is an FDA-approved treatment that has been clinically proven for all age groups and ethnicities. It is safe for all skin types, skin tones, and ages. Thanks to the non-invasive nature of this treatment, everyone, from teens to menopausal women and other adults, can benefit from this innovative treatment.

While many other acne treatments that target sebum also affect the melanin in patients with darker skin tones, AviClear effectively targets the sebum glands and nothing else. That means that patients with darker skin tones, many of whom have been let down by other treatments, can experience incredible results.

If you have tried conventional acne treatments with little success, then all hope is not lost. Many long-term sufferers have experienced dramatic and effective results with AviClear.

Will AviClear work on perimenopause & menopausal acne?

When women are going through either perimenopause or menopause, their hormones change dramatically in a short period of time. This change can throw the hormone balance in the body out of balance, and this change in hormones can lead to a massive increase in the production of sebum, which is the oil produced by the skin that causes acne.

While the body does need sebum production, the increased quantity is the reason that many menopausal women suffer acne.

AviClear is perfectly safe for sufferers of perimenopause and menopausal acne. In fact, it can provide quick and effective relief in a short period of time.

Is AviClear Suitable to Treat Teen Acne?

Similar to the hormonal changes that menopausal women go through, teenagers are also susceptible to acne because of the hormonal changes they go through during puberty. Unfortunately, while acne pimples pose no health danger to teenagers, during these years, the appearance of acne and spots can have a massive effect on their mental health and self-esteem.

This can lead them to try and treat their acne in detrimental ways that could have nasty side effects or leave them with lifelong scarring.

Some of these methods include using too much low-quality makeup to cover up spots or squeezing them.

By far, the best way to deal with teenage acne is to work with a skilled dermatologist and utilize proven treatments such as AviClear, which have been shown to provide relief without unwanted side effects.

Is AviClear Suitable to Treat Cystic Acne?

Cystic acne is usually the worst form of acne and can leave the sufferer with a lot of blackheads, painful spots and pimples, and inflammation. Cystic acne occurs due to the higher level of sebum providing a breeding ground for bacteria under the skin.

Up until recently, it has been a difficult task to treat cystic acne. Sufferers may have tried prescription creams and oral antibiotics, all of which come with serious side effects.

Thankfully, AviClear has been proven to work on all forms of acne, no matter how serious. This means that for those that suffer from Cystic acne, there is finally a treatment that can be used that carries very few side effects and none of the serious effects that prescription treatment carries.
